If the door is not showing any signs of chipping then a maintenance is in order.
If the chipping is on more than just the lower trim, then a refinishing
of the door is in order.
When the chipping is limited to the lower trim, a maintenance can possibly
be performed.
Keep in mind that a maintenance on boards that have chipped and sanded
exposing raw wood will provide protection for the wood but only one layer
deep, not three, so the life expectancy of the finish is less. We also
know that the other areas of the door are
aging and may soon begin to separate from the wood causing further
chipping and finish failure.
